It was a big surprise when James Cameron recently announced that he plans to make not one, but four “Avatar” sequels. And the director is serious about it because he has just announced that he plans to helm all four simultaneously.
According to Collider, James Cameron and 20th Century Fox confirmed the plans to make the four sequels to the 2009 movie “Avatar” at CinemaCon last week. Currently, the planned released schedules are Christmas 2018 for the second movie then Christmas 2020, Christmas 2022 and Christmas 2023 for “Avatar 3, 4 and 5” respectively.

The entertainment news site has then learned that the “Avatar” director plans to shoot four sequels concurrently, which is considered a very bold move even for an award-winning director. So, instead of working on the four films continuously, he intends to view it as a miniseries that will be done at the same time.
Nevertheless, shooting “Avatar” sequels at the same time is possible for Cameron though he had admitted to Famous Monsters of Filmland that it was going to “probably be the most challenging thing” he has ever done. Then he reportedly explained, “So Monday I might be doing a scene from Movie Four, and Tuesday I’m doing a scene from Movie One.”
He continued, “We’re working across, essentially, eight hours of story. It’s going to be a big challenge to keep it all fixed in our minds, exactly where we are, across that story arc at any given point.”
Moving forward, fans could not help but realize that the release of the four films may coincide with the release of future “Star Wars” films. So when this was brought up by Famous Monsters of Filmland, Cameron thinks it would not be fair to both franchises (“Star Wars” and “Avatar”).
He said, “I don’t want to go head-to-head with STAR WARS. That would be stupid. And hopefully they won’t want to go head-to-head with us.”
To summarize, James Cameron is indeed serious about the four “Avatar” sequels and he has already planned a strategy to make it possible. Fans can just sit back relax, wait and watch for one sequel after another.
