The upcoming season of HBO series Game of Thrones has a production budget of $10 million per episode, according to Entertainment Weekly. This means that season six, which premieres on April 24, cost approximately $100 million to produce. This is a $4 million increase from thereported budget of $6 million for season two; how paltry.
Showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff have teased that part of this new and improved budget will go towards the show’s most epic battle scene yet. “We’ve always wanted to get to a place – story-wise and budget-wise and time-wise and resource-wise – where we would be able to do a proper battle, with one army on one side, one army on another side,” Weiss told Entertainment Weekly. Since the death count rises with each season, who knows how many characters–and actors–will get the axe in this battle royale.
The most notable bloody battles in Game of Thrones–Massacre at Hardhome and Battle of Blackwater–set a high bar. The Battle of Blackwater reportedly cost $8 million to produce, which was $2 million over that season’s per episode budget, so this upcoming battle scene may top season six’s budget of $10 million. With Danaerys’ dragons fully grown, Cersei’s thirst for revenge and the White Walkers’ prowess, season six promises to be game changer for Game of Thrones.
Is it worth it for HBO to spend $10 million a pop on Game of Thrones? Absolutely.
